Products with Long Lifetimes

Diamond Systems is committed to providing long product lives, long term support, and lower cost of ownership for our products. We understand that many customers expect products to be available for a minimum of 5 to 7 years, with ongoing support following that.

Long Life Designed In

We design and build products with long product life cycles in mind. Our engineers design with the latest technologies and design in components with long term availability. We identify alternate vendors for components as well as drop in replacements to assure manufacturability.

Active Product Life

Diamond maintains a minimum of 7 year life cycles on standard products and provides advance notification in end of life situations. We follow a life cycle management process to provide you a stable hardware platform with opportunities for technology refreshes during the life of the product. We constantly monitor part availability and obsolescence to assure continuous production.

Many I/O products have been in active production for over 10 years. For example, two of our current top selling I/O boards were introduced in 1997 and 1998, and others have been in production since as early as 1991.

During a product's active life, it may undergo redesigns to replace aging components and update technology. Maintaining form-, fit-, and function- backward compatibility, including connector and software interfaces, is a critical part of these redesigns. Customers are provided with notification of the new version in advance of it shipping.

Emerald-MM-8P Serial Module
The Emerald-MM family of PC/104 serial I/O modules was first introduced over 20 years ago. Since then the family has undergone four technology refresh re-designs, maintaining backwards compatibility each time and greatly extending the product's active life for our customers.

New Products with Backward Compatibility

We often develop and introduce new products that are backwards compatible with older products approaching their end of life. While these products cannot always provide complete form-, fit-, and function-backwards compatibility with older products, they effectively extend the active life of our products, providing a migration path for existing customers and adding new features and technologies to enhance the performance of their system.

For example, our new Athena III SBC is form- fit- and function-compatible with our Athena II SBC, which in turn was a backward compatible replacement for the original Athena SBC. For well over ten years, the Athena SBC family has allowed users to upgrade their SBC and receive enhanced performance with little or no re-engineering effort.

End of Life

Diamond Systems maintains an End of Life Policy for managing the end of active production of our products. This policy provides the following end of life notifications to our customers:

  • Minimum three month advance notice of the last order date for a product
  • Minimum three month delivery schedule for the product beyond the last order date

This policy provides our customers with a minimum of three months notice to determine their final requirements for the product and place final purchase orders. Arrangements can be made on a case-by-case basis for extended product availability beyond this including bonded storage of components for future production after end of life.

While Diamond Systems makes its best efforts to follow these timeframes, in special cases where component availability becomes critical due to unforeseen circumstances, the end of life period may be reduced based on the available component supply.

Post End of Life

We continue to provide support for our products after the formal end-of-life on a best effort basis. Even after a product has reached the end of its life, we are often able to continue production for some time on a case-by-case basis. For example, we have continued to produce a PC/104 SBC six years after its official end-of-life due to ongoing availability of the CPU chip.
