Rugged Systems

Diamond Systems delivers military-grade rugged embedded computing systems and Ethernet switches with attractive pricing and delivery times. Common features and benefits of these systems include:

  • Solid-body aluminum CNC construction
  • MIL-DTL-38999 connectors
  • IP67 environmental protection
  • -40 to +85 deg. C or similar operating temperature
  • MIL-STD-461, -704, and -1275 compliant power
  • Impressive I/O features
  • High degree of configurability and customizability
  • Short leadtimes and competitive prices

SabreCom computers are based on our Jasper SBC utilizing COM Express modules with 11th / 13th generation Core i7 / Xeon processors for maximum performance scalability and product lifetime. The built-in I/O can be expanded with user choice of minicard and PCIe/104 I/O modules utilizing built-in I/O connectors to eliminate enclosure redesign efforts.

SabreNet Ethernet Switches feature both 1Gbe copper and 10Gbe copper/fiber (SFP) connectivity and Layer 3 routing software with IEEE1588 PTP option. The embedded switch software provides for configuration via a web-based graphical user interface as well as RS-232 port. The software can be upgraded to offer customer-specific branding and functionality.

Frequently Asked Questions

about Rugged Systems

How much CPU performance do I need?

The required processor performance is dictated by the intended application. Since power consumption and heat dissipation are directly tied to processor performance, right-sizing the processor is the number one consideration for most rugged systems, especially those operating under battery power.  The ideal system platform supports a wide range of processors, so you can select the one that has the best match in terms of performance and power consumption. Diamond’s SabreCom systems utilize COM Express modules, making it easy to offer multiple options for the processor.

How can I ensure the longest possible lifetime for my rugged system?

The key to any long-life electronic system is the ability to swap out obsolete components with new ones that are form/fit/function compatible. To achieve this goal, the system should be based on open standards supported by a wide range of manufacturers. This gives you the best protection in replacing an obsolete board. Diamond’s SabreCom systems utilize COM Express CPU modules and Minicard or PCIe104 modules for I/O expansion. All of these form factors are widely supported by rugged product vendors, resulting in a large range of options not only during initial system configuration but over the course of the product’s lifecycle in the event that one product reaches end of life.

What input power do these systems require?

Diamond’s rugged systems are available with two options: Direct input (generally with a MIL-STD-461 filter front end) or wide range input power supply with isolation. For the best flexibility and protection, our JMM-7500 input power supply features 10-60V input compatibility and a range of MIL standard compliance, including MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704, MIL-STD-1275, and DO-160. For a more economical solution where maximum protection is not needed, the power supply can be replaced with a MIL-STD-461 filter board.

What kind of connectors are appropriate for a rugged system?

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Some systems marketed as rugged use commercial-grade connectors such as RJ-45 or USB Type A, creating a weak link that compromises the system’s ruggedness. Diamond’s rugged systems use mostly MIL-DTL-38999 or similar style sealed connectors that provide the highest degree of ruggedness and reliability. For high-speed signaling such as 10GbE or HDMI which are incompatible with 38999, a ruggedized version of commercial style connectors may be used.
